Homiematrimony : Part 4

On the day that alliancepartner and his people came to present the cattle, his abakhongi brought an iPad with pictures of the cattle to show my father and uncles because they couldn’t memorise the isizulu names of the Nguni cattle they’d brought. Obviously this was a breach in protocol, but they were forgiven because someone was tryna marry the sangoma hothead of the family & my fathers were not gonna get in the way. Maria, the honorary mkhongi, brought clutch bags and boots for my mum and sister.

When the cattle arrived, I wasn’t allowed outside to see anything. I just sat in my room, joy weeping, and listening to the singing voices welcoming him into our family.

After we had celebrated, and finished eating all the meat, we set a date for our civil ceremony. We opted for a tiny ceremony with immediate family. His dad married us in the lounge of their home. On the 30th of June 2013, two years ago today,  two friends became family ❤
